All About AustieStrong!

6d71da9f-e742-4176-92ed-fbbce6eca535We're gearing up for the Third Annual AustieStrong Golf Tournament on Friday August 14th 2015! We've been posting all over social media, so we thought we'd take a minute to talk more about it and tell you why it's a cause so dear to our hearts! Plus we want to tell you about the best silent auction items EVER - you can now bid right from your phone even if you can't make the tourney.

What is AustieStrong?

AustieStrong was started by our ah-mazing instructor Sadie and her husband Brice in response to their son Austie's 2013 diagnosis of leukemia. Twin to brother Jack, Austie has been a major champ and although still in treatment, is getting ready to start school with his bro and enjoy all of the things 4 1/2 year old boys love to do!

AustieStrong provides financial support for many families in the cancer center at Children's Mercy. Sadie also started Parent Bags - a program to provide bags for new families coming into the hospital. The bags include things like soft towels and toiletry items for families who suddenly find themselves with terrifying diagnoses checked into Children's without anything from home.

"The night Austin was diagnosed I sat and held him in a chair for 12 hours straight. We didn't move to change a diaper, to throw up, to do anything. We just sat and I just held him.  When we were able to move out of the ICU to a room I was grateful for a shower.
At the time, I didn't think about it or care about it, but there was nothing for me to shower with besides water and baby soap. The towels at Children's Mercy are for small children, they are hand towels.

During our first week there a friend brought me body wash and a loofah sponge, seems small but it was one of the best things anyone did for me while we were at CMH. When your child is in the hospital, you don't want to leave. Not even if you live close by to shower. You want to be there every hour and make sure everything is ok. Our parent bags are designed to give a tiny ounce of comfort to parents and even teens staying at CMH.

They are given to families on the oncology unit when they are unexpectantly admitted. The bags include items such as full sized towels, a bath mat, body wash and shampoo and other common toiletries. Oncology families make several trips, mostly urgent, to the ER during treatment. It's our hope, these bags stay packed and in the car or by the door so when a family is rushing to the ER, the items they need for a hospital stay are ready for them."

So every penny donated goes to this awesome woman and her desire to bring comfort to people in a boat she's been in for a while. We've also partnered with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society for past events, teaming with this dedicated organization focused on educating families and raising money to find a cure for blood cancers - diagnosed in one person every three minutes in the US.

We'll be bringing Team Fusion to the LLS Light the Night on September 18th 2015! This will be our third year walking together at this family-friendly event. Games, free food & drinks, and hundreds of people get together to light up the night with lanterns and follow the lighted trail. It's a beautiful sight! The first year, pre-Austie's diagnosis, Sadie was actually our team leader. The Durbin family was rocked a little less than two weeks before the walk - and Team Fusion went from $700 raised to OVER $11,000 in about ten days! The Sweaty Sisterhood was in full effect.

What is the AustieStrong Golf Tournament?

This event is a 2ba2ff0a-ce82-4ef5-ba64-7eadfd03a870_copycelebration of Austin’s strength, a day to recognize the gratitude of healthy children and an opportunity to help make a difference in some of the hardest days for families dealing with childhood cancer.

We have a BLAST - whether golfing or volunteering, getting out to enjoy the sunshine and spend time with a group of people raising money for such a cool cause is just plain fun. Each hole has a different game or theme, people win prizes and our silent auction concludes at the dinner and awards celebration.

All proceeds go to AustieStrong and Parent Bags!

This year, we're taking the silent auction to the next level by allowing bidding from your phones/computers! And through the generosity of so many people within our Sweaty Sisterhood, you need to see what we have to offer!
