Seasonal Happiness

Raise your hand if you’re already feeling the need to hibernate! Now that 6pm feels like 9pm, missing the summer sunshine and extra hours of daylight can leave us all feeling a little gloomy and sluggish.

Rather than letting it sneak up on you, we think it’s important to intentionally evaluate your healthy habits now to keep you smiling and energized over the upcoming winter months.

WARM UP WITH A DAILY SWEAT

When the air is cold and the evenings are dark we tend to talk ourselves out of hitting the gym – don’t! The endorphin high will keep you feeling proud of committing to your workouts, and motivated to make healthy choices in other areas.

  • If you haven’t tried a Fusion Fly spin class, winter is the perfect time to jump on a bike. The calorie burn is huge and the rides will keep your cardio game strong if you’re unable to run outside.
  • Know the time of day you’re least likely to cancel your sweat sesh, schedule the workout and then don’t negotiate it. Keep the appointment with yourself as you would any other commitment on your calendar.
  • Remember the joy of seeing friends when you walk into Fusion Fitness – the energy of the workout and the laughs with your friends, always make it worth your while!

COMFORT FOOD DOESN'T HAVE TO BE FATTY FOOD

Yeah, we know, curling up on the couch with hot mac & cheese in sweatpants sounds pretty great when you leave work and it’s dark outside - but we all know how crappy it makes us feel afterwards.
  • Ready yourself with healthy comfort foods planned ahead, and don’t let meal planning slip just because you can’t hit the farmer’s market each week. Nutrition is especially important during these cold, dark months to keep your brain firing at top notch.
  • Check out different types of produce. Cauliflower, spaghetti squash, kale, beets, Brussels Sprouts and cabbage are all great winter veggies to mix into your diet.
  • Soup, soup, soup! You can clean out your fridge and pack a meal with tons of healthy goodness by trying out new soup recipes to get a warm and cozy meal without tons of calories. Check out these quick and healthy soups from Cooking Light if you need some inspiration!

MINIMIZE HOLIDAY STRESS - THE POWER OF NO
  • Don’t over schedule yourself. Look at your calendar a full week at a time before committing to events and activities, not just day-by-day. This allows you to consider how many nights a week you have an obligation, for example, or how many social gatherings you commit to on the weekend.
  • Cut the gifts and focus on the time. Meeting up with friends and family without the pressure of buying gifts will make everyone happy and less stressed, including your pocket book!

SERVE

The greatest happiness is found in serving others - look for opportunities to serve someone else in an area you’re passionate about. Try to volunteer your time or services at least once a month. Check out Volunteer Match for local opportunities.

GET SOME AIR

Even when it’s freezing, step outside for a few minutes a day to breathe in some fresh air. A quick walk with the dog, parking farther away from the store entrance or walking your kids to school are fast ways to soak up some fresh, cold, air. You'll be surprised at the difference it will make!
